Landscaping With Vines

Beauty or Beast?

In the ancient movie (yes, some people consider the 80's the good old days) "Romancing the Stone" Michael Douglas while searching for exotic parrots for the black market trade used a machete to make a path for himself by hack away at the vines growing all around in a tangled mess. He probably thought they were nothing short of a nuisance while he was trudging through the dense growing rain forests of Columbia. But when he came across the sultry damsel in distress played by Kathleen Turner and they ended up sliding down an embankment and almost careened over a cliff what was it that saved them from certain death? You guessed it; it was the same vine he had been grumbling about moments earlier.

Why are you being told this? To illustrate to you that just because something is seemingly wild, uncontrollable and encroaching like the vine it is not in reality all bad when in the right hands. Whose hands are the right ones? Why yours of course! You are a gardener after all and have the power over your flora dominion. Don’t believe it? Well, stick around and learn all you will need to know about the mysterious, ungainly, evocative plants known as vines.

Great zone idea and gorgeous layout. I love the photos you picked! My favorite vine plants are the edible ones like cucumber, grape, cantaloupe, peas, and beans. I used to have a grape arbor, but the wind blew it down :(
